30 minutes · 40 questions · Heard once

Four recordings — conversations, monologues, academic discussions — in Australian, British and North American English. You hear each recording once only and must answer questions as you listen.

Reading

60 minutes · 40 questions · 3 long texts

Three long, complex passages from books, journals and newspapers — increasing in difficulty. You must locate information, identify writer opinions and understand arguments, all against the clock.

Common challenge

Reading word-for-word is fatal in IELTS Reading. Time runs out before the third passage. Most candidates lose marks not from lack of English, but from poor strategy.

Writing

60 minutes · Task 1 (150w) + Task 2 (250w)

Task 1: Describe a graph, chart, table or diagram in at least 150 words. Task 2: Write an argumentative essay on a general topic in at least 250 words. Task 2 carries double the marks.

Common challenge

Coherence and cohesion — connecting ideas logically and fluidly — are where most candidates lose marks. So is failing to directly address the question asked.

11–14 minutes · 3 parts · Face to face

A face-to-face interview with an examiner in three parts: introduction and familiar topics, a 2-minute talk on a given topic, then an in-depth discussion. The examiner will very likely have an Australian accent.

Nerves, long pauses, and repeating the same vocabulary. Candidates who only practise with non-native speakers are often unprepared for the pace of a native Australian examiner.

More than a teacher

My family crosses two continents.

My daughter was born in South America. Her mum is South American. That makes South America part of my life too — not as an academic interest, but as something I live every single day. The languages, the culture, the warmth, the different way of seeing the world.

She spends most of the year here on the Gold Coast with me, and part of the year with her family overseas. She grows up bilingual, bicultural — the best of both worlds. Watching that happen has made me a better teacher of the challenges that come with crossing languages and cultures.

For the past two years, we have been part of a South American dance community here on the Gold Coast — an experience that has deepened my connection to the communities I teach.
